Firefly

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

I’ve just finished watching all of the episodes of Firefly (IMDB) and can safely say it’s some of the best TV I’ve ever seen. The events and characters are immediately accessible thanks to a believable script and actors who appear extremely comfortable in their roles. You can tell that everyone involved with the show really loved working on it.

Yes, it’s Sci-Fi. No, there aren’t any aliens. Yes, space ships are involved, but in Firefly, futuristic technology takes a back seat while character development mans the helm. The show has this perfect blend of action, humor, and emotion that leaves you satisfied at the end of each episode and yet craving for more.

Sadly, they only made 14 episodes of Firefly before the show was cancelled in 2002. Personally, I can’t understand why it was cancelled, but Wikipedia’s entry for Firefly has this to say:

Fans attributed the low ratings in part to actions of the FOX Network. Firefly was promoted as an action-comedy rather than the more serious character study it was intended to be. Episodes were occasionally preempted for sporting events, and episodes were not aired in storyline-chronological order as the creators had intended.

Nevertheless, there was enough interest in Firefly to fund a full-length feature, Serenity. In fact, the whole reason why I started watching Firefly was that I heard all this hype about how Serenity was such a great movie. I wanted to watch Firefly first so I’d be more familiar with the characters before seeing the story continue in Serenity. Well, this Friday, I’ll be counting the hours until I can leave work and run to the movie theater to see Serenity.

Seriously, if you haven’t seen Firefly yet, what are you waiting for? You can buy the Firefly 4-Disc DVD set at Amazon or rent it at Netflix. Trust me, you’ll love it.

This is one of my favorite recent pics I’ve taken. Shot at the Central Park Conservancy Gardens.

What have I been up to in the last week?

  • Watching Firefly. Some of the best TV I’ve ever seen. Don’t believe me? It has 5/5 stars avg rating out of 1740 reviews at Amazon.
  • Hanging out with Leonard. He stayed with us last weekend. I always love hanging with him, and it was nice to congratulate him in-person for the Yahoo! acquisition of Upcoming. Go Lenny!
  • Not playing any World of Warcraft. Think it’s time to cancel my account.
  • Spent the last two days at a Microsoft training event learning about the new features in SQL Server 2005. Some neat stuff like PIVOT built into T-SQL now and the SQL Service Broker looks like it might be a useful messaging server.
  • Hanging out with Margaret’s parents. They arrived Thursday night, and we’re all having fun hanging out. It’s nice to have in-laws that I love so much (yeah, I’m not really married, but ok, come on, they’re in-laws).
  • Starting to play with Ruby on Rails. So far, I like it, but I need to build a real app to see how it really feels. Hoping to have more time to play in the coming weeks.

Help Is Available By the Bushel

Tutor.com (the company I work for) has had some great press lately. Check out this video clip from CBS 5 in San Jose (a transcript is available, too). Snip:

The San Jose Public Library took a new service online today that provides immediate, free help to any student who’s homework has them stumped. James Lick senior Jonathan Pires today took it for a test drive. “Right now, I just tested it with a math question to make sure it would explain everything to me thoroughly, and, I mean, it’s actually a little more efficient than the teachers.”

Go Tutor!

South Park Style

Last night, using the previously bookmarked South Park character generator, we had a bit of fun designing what our South Park selves might look like.

Fixing the “Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture (or the neutral culture) in the given assembly. Make sure …” error when using a ResourceManager in ASP.NET

Blogging this in case others run into this problem and need help. Via http://weblogs.asp.net/ngur/archive/2003/12/28/46219.aspx:

# It is the “default namespace” needed to set correctly. I got the same problem, eventually I found out you need to right click on your project in VS and find your “default namespace”. Insert the name before the resource name as “MyDefaultNamSpace.stringtable.resx”. 7/3/2004 8:40 PM | Yangxin

My default namespace was different than the namespace of the assembly I was working with, and my creation of a new ResourceManager object was failing. Turns out that I too needed to use the default namespace for the project in my code: ResourceManager rm = new ResourceManager(“DefaultNamespace.ResourceFile”, Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly());

Sounds So Sweet

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

Margie just got me a pair of Sony MDR-D66SL headphones as an anniversary present. They’re my preferred type of headphone (closed ear), and while they make you look a little like a space cadet when you’ve got them on, they also sound fantastic.

I’m not any kind of hi-fi aficionado, but I can tell the difference between these, and a few other pairs of headphones I’ve had in the past. It’s hard to pin down exactly what makes these sound so awesome. They make the music I’m listening to sound more immediate, if that makes sense. It feels strange describing sound in terms of other senses, but music definitely feels more deep and textured with the MDR-D66SL’s. And, with these bad boys on, I’ve noticed new bits and pieces in nearly every song I’ve listened to.

You just don’t get this kind of sound with the iPod headphones, but I won’t be wearing these on my commute. They’ll get a nice spot all their own on my desk at work, where they’ll be loved for countless hours of sonic bliss.

Thanks, Margie!

Back From the Dead (almost)

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

Ye gods, it’s been almost two months since my last post! A lot has happened since then:

  • Toad, one of our African Dwarf Frogs died. We think he was sick when we got him. Frog, the other one, is still living happily
  • I started playing World of Warcraft and am now starting to dislike the direct correlation between me playing WoW and me not posting to my blog. I haven’t played much lately
  • My Mom got married to Jerry and we took a trip to the boundary waters
  • We finished version 1.0 of the software I’ve been working on at work
  • I laid w00t to rest
  • I redesigned avantbard.com

I promise to try and post more regularly once again.
