Cool Art

Monday, November 21st, 2005

This weekend, Margaret and I went to check out random art in the galleries in Chelsea. By far, the coolest show we saw was called “The Glory Hole” by Tim Noble and Sue Webster. Their show was a collection of seemingly junk-like sculptures made out of welded metal. However, each piece had a light projecting onto it from a precise position on the floor such that a human shadow was cast onto the wall behind the piece. Kind of hard to explain more than that, so here’s two pictures.

If you’re in NYC, definitely go check it out. The show is at the Bortolami Dayan gallery – 510 West 25th Street, New York 10001 – 212.727.2050.

Fall

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

Yep, it’s Fall in NYC again, though you probably wouldn’t make the connection between this picture and NYC (it was taken in Central Park, here’s a few more). The juxtaposition of seemingly slightly untamed nature and the hustle bustle of the city is one of the things I love most about Central Park. I love that I only have to walk about fifteen minutes from my apartment to appreciate the Fall colors in full effect.

CANstruction

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

Last week, Margaret helped construct her firm’s entry in this year’s CANstruction competition here in NYC. They built a lobster out of anchovy cans and got a very respectable Honorable Mention award for it. We went this past Saturday to check out all the entries. Yep, there’s pictures.

My favorite entry was the pirate ship, titled Pirates of the CAN-o-bean. It wasn’t the most structurally impressive, or the most dazzling, but it was definitely the funniest. Though not all strictly canned items, their use of additional foods to embelish their design was great. There were bags of goldfish crackers in the water (which was made from Chips Ahoy boxes and Ocean Spray bottles as waves). Captain Crunch manned the helm, and PeterPan (peanut butter) even made an appearance on the ship. There was even a life preserver ring made from, you guessed it, Life Savers. Totally great.

AimBots

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

I just signed on to AIM today and saw:

[09:51] AOL System Msg: AIM added a new AIM Bots group to your Buddy List. [09:51] AOL System Msg: Send IMs to moviefone and shoppingbuddy for great holiday flicks and gift ideas. (To remove ‘em, just right-click and delete! Learn More)

Is this part of AOL’s attempt to improve their image, by giving me new buddies (albeit virtual ones)? I’m so thrilled.

What’s Up

Friday, November 4th, 2005

What I’ve been up to:

  • Saw Serenity. *GUSH* Pretty much one of my best movie experiences in recent memory. Unlike the Matrix sequels, Serenity delivered all the way. Also, I bought the Firefly DVDs (there’s already a waiting list of friends who want to borrow them).
  • Went to Vegas for a company retreat / planning meeting. Lost $80 in 4 minutes playing craps at the Bellagio (most expensive gin and tonic I’ve ever had), but made it back playing blackjack right before I left. Also, the Bellagio water show is awesome (I expected it to be tacky).
  • Started hacking a little with Ruby on Rails. So far, pretty fun. I don’t know if it’s still a little rough around the edges or if I’m just not doing everything the Rails Way, but it’s getting easier to work with without opening Agile Web Development with Rails every 10 minutes.
  • Almost done with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Pretty fun game, although a little repetitive at times; at this point (90% done), I just want to finish it.
